More about the printLouise McGregor started her career modeling in London. She and my father crossed paths sometime in the early 1960s, and what followed was fifteen years of marriage and three sons. This photograph was made in Jamaica, one of his favorite places in the world, early in that story.
There are thousands of photographs of Louise in this archive. What strikes me going through them is how consistently she draws you in without giving anything away. She had a natural instinct for the camera, the kind you can't teach, and she seemed to understand that the most compelling thing a subject can do is withhold just enough. You keep looking because you can't quite place what she's thinking. This frame is a perfect example of it. She's right there, and completely elsewhere at the same time.
