Monte Carlo, Monaco, May 27, 1966
Archival pigment print, printed 2025 · Edition of 25
Printed from the photographer's original slide.
The Monaco Grand Prix drew people from every corner of the world for a promised week of glamour and spectacle. At the center of it was the Bal du Second Empire, held on May 27, 1966 at the Opéra de Monte Carlo. Hosted by Hélène Rochas, the Salle Garnier, the Casino Atrium and the Casino Terraces were transformed for the occasion, celebrating both the 100th anniversary of Monte-Carlo and the 150th anniversary of the death of Napoléon III. The ball was opened by Princess Grace wearing a magnificent coronation tiara that had once belonged to Joséphine Beauharnais. My father was there with his camera.
These photographs were never published. They are what you see when the press isn't looking.
Released by the Orator Woodward Archive.
