My father lived at 1115 Fifth Avenue during the height of his New York years. The penthouse had a courtyard, and if you know anything about him, you already know it was never empty for long. This photograph was made there sometime around 1972, three women on a summer afternoon, completely at ease. The one in the foreground looks straight into the lens without a second thought. Behind her, someone reclines in white. In the back, a third woman has picked up a camera of her own. He wasn't on assignment. He was just home. That's what makes it.
